Last updated: September 23, 2026. This policy explains what information is handled when you use Rain by Zip, how hosting and weather providers process requests, and how advertising may use cookies or similar technologies.

Information you provide

You can use Rain by Zip without creating an account. When you search for a city or ZIP code, the search text is sent to Open-Meteo’s geocoding service so matching U.S. locations can be displayed.

When your browser supports device location, the site requests it with your permission. If permission is declined or location is unavailable, enter a city or ZIP code. Only browsers without device-location support use an approximate city from your internet connection; this may differ from your actual location. The location response is not cached or shared with other visitors.

On the homepage, or when you choose “Use my location,” your browser asks for permission if needed. An explicitly saved city or ZIP takes precedence until you change it or click the header logo. Coordinates are sent to Rain by Zip’s weather endpoints on Cloudflare and then to the relevant weather providers. Exact device coordinates are not saved as a remembered location in your browser. Rain by Zip does not operate a user-account database.

Weather-service data

Selected coordinates and date ranges are used to request weather data from Open-Meteo and NOAA. Rainfall responses are cached by rounded coordinates to improve loading speed; these cached weather values do not contain a visitor’s name or IP address. Provider and hosting requests may include ordinary technical information under those services’ policies. Review the Open-Meteo terms and privacy information for details.

Hosting, security, and technical data

Rain by Zip is hosted and delivered through Cloudflare. When you request a page or file, Cloudflare and the site operator may process technical information such as your IP address, request time, requested URL, referrer, browser or device information, and security signals. This information may be used to deliver the site, prevent abuse, troubleshoot errors, and understand aggregate traffic. Cloudflare processes this information under its own policies and applicable retention settings.

Browser storage and offline files

The site uses a service worker and browser cache to store copies of site files on your device for faster loading and limited offline access. Current rainfall and automatic location responses are not stored by the service worker for offline display. If you dismiss the optional app-install suggestion, a small preference in local storage remembers that choice for 30 days. A city or ZIP you select is remembered on this device for up to 30 days so its rainfall loads on your next visit. Device location clears that saved selection. You can remove these preferences through your browser’s site-data controls.

Advertising and cookies

Rain by Zip may display advertising supplied by Google AdSense. When advertising is active, third-party vendors, including Google, may use cookies, web beacons, IP addresses, or similar identifiers to serve, limit, and measure advertising.

Third-party vendors, including Google, use cookies to serve ads based on a visitor’s prior visits to this website or other websites. Google’s use of advertising cookies enables Google and its partners to serve ads based on visits to Rain by Zip and other sites.

Consent choices

Where required, visitors will be shown a consent message that provides choices about advertising cookies and personal-data use. For visitors in the European Economic Area, the United Kingdom, and Switzerland, Rain by Zip intends to use a Google-certified consent management platform integrated with the IAB Transparency and Consent Framework.

Email communications

If you email the site contact, we receive the address you use and the contents of your message. We use that information to respond, maintain business records, protect the site, or comply with legal obligations. Please do not send sensitive personal, financial, medical, or account information by email.

Information sharing and retention

Rain by Zip does not sell the city, ZIP code, coordinates, or date range you use for a rainfall lookup. Hosting, weather, and advertising providers may process request information as described above and retain it according to their own policies or configured retention periods. We may disclose information when legally required or when necessary to protect the site, its operator, and its visitors.

Children’s privacy

Rain by Zip is a general-audience weather utility and is not directed to children under 13. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children through an account or registration system.
